Holland Ave Rezone
Most of you are probably already aware of the proposed rezone of Holland Ave. If not, here is a brief summary from one of our neighbors.
The proposal to rezone Holland Avenue for a huge Walgreen drugstore when there are 5 excellent drugstores and a Price Chopper within walking distance makes no sense. (Two of those drugstores are locally owned which is best for our economy and community.) It also changes the rules for those small businesses and homeowners who have followed the rules and invested in our neighborhood understanding that Holland Avenue was zoned for offices. Living next to an office is entirely different than living next to a huge drive through drugstore and parking lot. Our neighborhoods are already suffering from negative outside interests. We do want to lose even more local control of our important assets and the ability to locally plan for the future of our beloved city.
Shawn Morris has put together a flyer about the next Council Meeting on Monday, December 5 at 7 pm in City Hall. If you are intersted in helping to distribute this flyer, let me know, and I can email a PDF version to you.
Also, if you know people outside the 7th Ward, ask them to contact their concil member about this issue.

What was the final outcome and the final vote? I didn't hear anything about it after the Metroland and e-mails.

From what I saw in Metroland, the vote was 8-5 in favor of the rezoning. What is interesting is that those who voted against it are those whose wards including the area, or bordered it, while the others did not.
I oppose spot zoning, and I am also concerned that this vote represented general contempt for the will of the Albany residents directly affected by the rezoning.
